Assessment for Learning

Some of my first teaching experiences were at Harwin Elementary where I was teaching and co-teaching grade 4/5 Social Studies with other members of my cohort. Many of our students struggled with getting their ideas and thoughts down on paper so we incorporated as many styles of learning as possible throughout our short unit. We had some writing activities, drawing activities, reading activities, and art/hands on activities. As a final project for the unit we created and co-created, the students worked in pairs or small groups to create a diorama of sorts in order to visually showcase and verbally explain their learning surrounding the local indigenous culture of Prince George. I was astounded at how much they had learned about the Lheidli T’enneh people and their culture involving fishing, hunting, smoke houses, pit houses, cottonwood canoes etc. With this project, students showed and told me what they knew, while continuing to learn from each other in the process.
